What does GOOD promise in 2026?

Core services

Water: GOOD promises to price water in tiers based on household size and need, not only on how much is used. Tiers are steps with different prices. Its Cape Town plan says a family of six should not face the same limit as a single pensioner. In its own words: “Price water and electricity in tiers that reward conservation and scale with household size and need, not usage alone”

Housing and land

Building houses: GOOD promises to make new developments in well-located areas include a set share of affordable homes. Its Cape Town plan says developers would provide these homes in return for extra building rights. It says the share would be enforceable, which means the City could make developers keep to it. In its own words: “require new developments in well-located areas to include a genuine, enforceable share of affordable units”

Where does GOOD govern?

The 8 metros

City of Cape Town: In opposition. In 2021 the DA won 135 seats and a majority. GOOD won nine seats. After the election, GOOD said it would not join coalitions (groups of parties that run a council together). It said it would act as opposition instead. Brett Herron is the joint GOOD and Rise Mzansi mayoral candidate for 2026.

City of Tshwane: Our sources do not make this clear. From October 2024, GOOD's councillor Sarah Mabotsa was the mayoral committee member for Economic Development and Spatial Planning (planning how land is used). That is a councillor on the mayor's team who runs one area of work. She sat on Mayor Nasiphi Moya's mayoral committee, which has members from several parties. In July 2026 RISE Mzansi named her its Tshwane mayoral candidate, according to the Sunday Independent. RISE Mzansi runs joint candidates with GOOD. On 28 September 2026 GOOD said it had ended her membership. It also asked that she be removed as councillor and mayoral committee member. We found no major news outlet that says who now holds the seat or the post.

Nelson Mandela Bay: In opposition. GOOD's one councillor, Lawrence Troon, sits in the opposition to Mayor Babalwa Lobishe's ANC-led coalition. In July 2026 he filed notice of a motion of no confidence in her. Such a motion asks the council to vote her out. After the 2021 election, GOOD joined the ANC-led coalition that elected Eugené Johnson as mayor.

Other councils

In Theewaterskloof, GOOD is in a coalition with the DA and SRWP. The DA's Lincoln de Bruyn was mayor until a motion from the ANC, PA and EFF removed him in late September 2026, IOL reported. In October 2026 the DA said the council had voted to undo his removal, the Daily Voice reported. No source outside the DA confirms who is mayor now. GOOD's Cynthia Clayton is executive deputy mayor, and GOOD's Welldon Wells is speaker (the person who chairs council meetings). Both have held these posts since November 2024. This comes from the council website, updated August 2026, and the audited 2024/25 financial statements. From 2021 to 2024 GOOD backed an ANC-led coalition with a PA mayor. In September 2024 GOOD expelled three of its councillors who voted to remove the DA mayor. GroundUp reported that the council was "bankrupted within three financial years" while the ANC, PA and GOOD held the political reins. Its 2023/24 audit was qualified, which means the Auditor-General found some numbers it could not trust. Irregular spending, meaning spending that broke the rules, rose to R262 million. In November 2024 the province put the council under financial administration, which means the province steps in to fix the council's money. The Auditor-General's 2024-25 report lists Theewaterskloof among councils whose audit outcome got worse over the council term. It also lists the council among three Western Cape councils with going concern uncertainty, a warning that money problems may stop it running services.

In Matzikama, GOOD joined the ANC, PA and EFF coalition that took over on 29 May 2025. GOOD councillor Christoffel van der Westhuizen became the mayoral committee member for community services, a post on the mayor's team. Both facts come from Daily Maverick. In August 2025 the DA won a by-election (a vote to fill one empty seat). Daily Maverick then reported that the DA now had enough votes to take back the mayor's post. We could not confirm whether that coalition is still in office.

What links does GOOD have abroad?

What it has said about the world

Brett Herron, GOOD's Secretary-General, said this in a party statement. South Africa has a case against Israel at the UN's top court, the International Court of Justice. GOOD praises the government for this, though it says the case costs South Africa Donald Trump's favour. It says being left off Trump's Board of Peace for Gaza is no loss. GOOD wants South Africa to keep the case and not drop it to please the US. In its own words: “for its courage to act on its principles by charging Israel with genocide at the International Court of Justice”

Brett Herron, GOOD's Secretary-General, said this in a party statement. A plane had brought 153 Palestinians from Gaza to South Africa without warning. GOOD says they left because Gaza was destroyed, so in effect they were forced out. It says an Israeli government office seems to back such flights, and calls forcing people out a war crime. GOOD wants South Africa to give extra sworn evidence about this in its case against Israel at the UN's top court. In its own words: “The GOOD Party calls on the South African government to continue its principled advocacy for justice in Palestine by submitting a supplementary affidavit to the International Court of Justice”

Brett Herron, GOOD's Secretary-General, said this in a party statement. GOOD says South Africa wants to keep working with the United States. But it believes Donald Trump will only be friendly if South Africa leaves BRICS and drops its case against Israel. GOOD says South Africa should refuse, even if relations must be put on hold for a while. If the US adds taxes on South African goods, it wants South Africa to find new buyers elsewhere. In its own words: “The US is the most powerful economy in the world. It is not a relationship that South Africa seeks to break.”

Brett Herron, GOOD's Secretary-General, said this in a party statement. The G20 is a group of 20 big economies whose leaders meet each year. The US leads the G20 this year. GOOD says the US decided on its own to remove South Africa. GOOD says the US had no right to do this, because South Africa helped start the G20. It wants South Africa to keep talking to the US and correct false claims, but not give in. In its own words: “The decision by the new G20 President for the year, the United States, to unilaterally cancel South Africa’s membership is procedurally flawed and disdainful of multilateralism.”

GOOD praises the government for keeping old friends in the West while making new ones in BRICS. It wants South Africa to stay in BRICS and keep its court case on Israel, even if the US stays unfriendly. It notes that Donald Trump has three more years in office. In its own words: “the only way back into Trump’s good books would be for South Africa to renounce its membership of BRICS and its case against Israel at the ICJ. Brett Herron, a GOOD MP, asked the President a question in Parliament about the war in Ukraine. He said GOOD could back much of the President's approach. That meant calling for peace, not accepting the violence, and supporting efforts made by many countries together. In its own words: “we can get behind much of what the President said today that the war could have been avoided, we advocate for peace, we don’t condone the violence and we are ready to support the multilateral efforts.”
