What happens to my message?

The only place you can give us personal information is our message form.

What does the form collect?

What it collects: What your message is about and what you write. For a mistake, the claim. Your email, only if you add it.

Without an email: We still read your message, but we cannot reply to you.

Age: The form is for people 18 or older.

Why do we need it?

Why: To read your message, check any report and answer you. We never use it for anything else.

Never: No mailing list. We never sell or share your details. The corrections page never shows who told us.

Who else handles it?

Google Cloud Firestore: Stores your message in Johannesburg. Only the publisher can read it, after signing in.

Google Firebase Hosting: Serves the website. It records the IP address of each visit and keeps it for a few months.

Google Workspace: Hosts the publisher’s mailbox. If we answer by email, the reply stays there.

How long do we keep it?

How long: We delete your message and email address from our database 90 days after we answer. If we never answer, 90 days after it arrives.

Email replies: If we answer by email, the reply stays in the publisher’s mailbox, which Google Workspace hosts. The 90 days does not apply to that mailbox.

If something goes wrong: If others may have seen your details, we tell you and the Information Regulator.

Visits and your rights

Does the site set cookies?

Cookies: We set no cookies unless you tap Allow.

On your device: Low-data mode, large text and the last home photo are saved in your browser only. Clearing your browser data removes them.

Other websites: Links to the (IEC The Electoral Commission of South Africa. It runs elections. It is independent, so it does not take orders from the government or any party.), news sites and archived copies have their own privacy rules.

Does the site use my location?

When: Only if you tap “Find my ward from where I am” on Your ballot or in the quiz. We never ask on page load.

What happens: Your phone works it out on the 2026 ward map.

What we keep: Your location never leaves your phone. We do not save it or send it anywhere.

The web address: Only your council and ward go into the address after the #, on your phone. Nothing is stored or sent.

What does Google Analytics count?

What it counts: The pages you open, taps on outside links and share buttons, and that a report was sent, never what it says.

Cookies: It sets cookies to tell visits apart. Google signals and advertising features are off.

Your IP address: Your browser connects to Google, so Google receives it. Google Analytics does not store it.

Where and how long: The data goes to Google in the United States, which POPIA allows when you consent. Google keeps it for 2 months.

Your choice: Nothing loads until you tap Allow, and nothing ever loads in low-data mode. Your choice is kept for 6 months. Change it with “Cookie choice” at the foot of every page.

What are my rights under POPIA?

You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it or delete it, and object to us using it.

What if I am not happy with your answer?

Complain to the Information Regulator. It makes sure POPIA is followed.
